In the first stretch of 2024, Alessandro Kanina and Boris Andreev put together a catalogue that revs up the works of Theresa Babb (1868-1948) — a pioneering American photographer whose oeuvre has been left to languish, stashed away in the underbelly of the public domain. With self-penned essays in both German and English, the project was propelled by the conviction that Babb’s photographs merit a fresh burst of acclaim and re-examination. The book won silver at the German Photobook Award 24/25.

This exhibition revisits the history of Bulgarian everyday life through the lens of the chushkopek (pepper roaster) — an object that has undergone many transformations over the past fifty years. By exploring its design and cultural significance, the curators Adriana Andreeva and Boiana Gjaurova (Komplekt) seek to understand how this humble appliance became an icon of domestic life. The starting point was a simple question: is there design in the pepper roaster? Contributors from diverse disciplines were invited to engage with the pepper roaster and reimagine it through their own mediums for today’s context.

Design Lab #12 sheds light on the traditional material of metal from its soft side. Contemporary cast objects by design students reveal the potential of the material in art casting. The works enter into dialogue with historical pieces from the collection and form a new narrative between tradition and today. Created in cooperation with the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences under the guidance of Claudia Banz, Wibke Bornkessel and Hermann August Weizenegger.
